The MOD's online Armed Forces Pension Calculator (AFPC)

What the MOD calculator is

The Armed Forces Pension Calculator is a web tool at www.mod-pc.co.uk. gov.uk, the AFPS 15 scheme booklet, AFPS Form 12 and Form 1 all point to that one address. It is on the public internet, so you do not need a MOD login to open it, and it also works from the MOD network. Only its user guide sits behind a MODNET login.

Its terms say it "will provide a guide to the pension benefits you could expect to receive under AFPS 75, FTRS 97, AFPS 05, RFPS 05 and AFPS 15". It gives a pension projection and an Early Departure Payment figure, in today's money, and lets you test different leaving dates. It does not work out the pension tax annual allowance; for that it points to HMRC's own calculator.

The front page asks you to have these to hand: your pay statements for April 2015 and April 2016, any pension sharing order notice, any Added Pension or additional voluntary contribution agreements, and, if you are affected by the McCloud remedy, your Remediable Service Statement.

Who can use it

The AFPC is built for serving personnel. Its front page says it "is designed to be used by serving Regular, MPGS and Reservist personnel", and its terms say it "provides projections only for those currently serving".

That is the single most common reason it seems not to work. If you have left the forces, it will not project your pension. The MOD route for a preserved or deferred pension is AFPS Form 14, now also available online. If your pension is already being paid, forecasts come from Equiniti Paymaster instead.

Old, new and enhanced: the versions explained

The MOD has used the same web address for its calculator since at least 2010, so the old calculator and the new one live in the same place. No earlier version is offered. Archived copies of the front page show how it changed.

"Enhanced" is the MOD's own word. The RAF announced that "The enhanced Armed Forces Pension calculator went live on 1 August 2023", adding a side-by-side comparison of reformed and legacy scheme benefits for those in scope of the 2015 remedy. It has nothing to do with Enhanced Learning Credits, which is a separate scheme that helps pay for training.

Has it been updated for 2026?

We found no public MOD announcement of a calculator update in 2025 or 2026. The calculator says it is "based on the most recently published pension codes and pay rates", and the MOD published the April 2026 AFPS 75 pension codes on 14 August 2026. Whether the calculator has taken those in yet cannot be checked from outside, so treat a projection made soon after April as possibly using the previous year's figures.

Why the calculator may not work for you

These are the reasons the MOD itself gives for the calculator not producing a result, or producing one it warns may be wrong:

• You are not currently serving. It only projects benefits for serving members.
• You are in an excluded group. Its terms list RFPS medical and dental officers, RFPS professional aviators, RFPS officers commissioned from the ranks, members of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment, and some AFPS 75 Special Forces officers commissioned from the ranks. Veterans UK can produce a forecast instead.
• You have a pension sharing order that falls in the McCloud remedy period. The terms say that "Only upon receipt of RSS will this cohort be able to receive an accurate calculation."
• You are in AFPS 75 with a break in service before 6 April 2006 and a preserved pension. The terms warn "your forecast will be inaccurate" and advise using Form 12.
• You are 54 or over at retirement. You "will not be able to receive an accurate Resettlement Commutation figure".
• You are an AFPS 75 officer leaving on Premature Voluntary Release. The calculator uses the compulsory rates, so "your actual award may be lower than the projection".

We found no MOD notice of an outage or maintenance period. Reports of the calculator crashing or returning to the start page come from users on forums, not from the MOD. The MOD's user guide says to report problems through your personnel administration chain of command.

Is there an armed forces pension calculator app?

No official one. Searches of the UK App Store and Google Play on 27 September 2026 found no MOD, Veterans UK or DBS pension calculator app. The AFPC is a website, and the MOD's own guide says it works on "A computer, tablet or mobile phone with internet access".

The closest thing is the RAF's My RAF app, for RAF personnel only, which the RAF says gives "Access to monthly pay statements, the Armed Forces Pension calculator and wider benefits information". We found no equivalent for the Army or Royal Navy. Any other pension calculator app in the stores is not an MOD product.

Official ways to get a figure

In September 2026 the MOD set out four sources of pension figures, and it is worth knowing which one does what. Only the forecast and the Remediable Service Statement are worked out from your actual records.

The MOD's own wording is blunt: "Final pension awards are determined under scheme rules and verified pension records; planning tools are estimates." If a decision depends on the number, get a forecast. You are entitled to one free forecast every 12 months. After leaving, extra forecasts cost £90. How this site's calculator is different

The armed forces pension calculator on this site is independent. Anyone can use it, including veterans and people with a preserved pension, because it estimates from the published scheme rules rather than from your pay record. That also means it is an estimate, not an official figure. For a number you can rely on, use a Veterans UK forecast.
